Memorial Day memories for me as a child was for our family to go to the cemetery where my Grandparents and other family members were buried in the local cemetery with beautiful large trees gracing the countryside landscape their branches swaying in the gentle summer breeze.
There were many graves of soldiers who went off to fight in World War II and never came home except for their bodies to be claimed by a loving family member for internment in this cemetery. My uncle was one of those soldiers. Another uncle began a tradition of placing geraniums on all the soldiers graves. Many years have passed and now my parents and all my uncles and aunts are deceased, My cousin continues the family tradition of honoring the graves of the soldiers and in addition places flowers on the family graves.
I can pull into the drive at the cemetery any time over Memorial Day Weekend and see the bright red geraniums knowing my cousin has kept his father's commitment going for more than 75 years.
Take a moment and think of a solder who gave all.
