On this the eve of the 4th of July, many people are packing to go out of town for the weekend, whether it is to the lake or to visit friends. This weekend marks more backyard cookouts than any other weekend of the year.
However, my thoughts are elsewhere. The British had had enough of the colonies who dared to stand up to taxation. And determined to squash the rebellion sent their army in 1775 and eventually their navy across the Atlantic for a sure fire victory.
In 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 brave men who knew they were likely signing their own death warrant. The signers were wealthy individuals who could have easily sat by and paid the taxes levied by the Crown. And, of course, there were many wealthy people who did just that - sat by.
The British didn't count on groups of patriots who fought from behind trees, ridges, ditches, etc. Or ordinary people who became spies for the colonies. And who were these patriots who were willing to freeze during the winter in their quest for freedom. Finally, after many lives were lost, the British gave up and went back to England.
We are the benefactors of these brave men and women. So while it is a great tradition to have cookouts and be with friends this weekend, let us remember how it is that we have the right to do so on this July 4, 2025.
